| The oyster culture basin of Marennes - Oléron is characterized by the tastiness of its oysters and the good quality of its waters, and thus of its shellfish. On that account, the quasi-totality of the production areas are ranked A for non-burrowing shellfishes, thus confirming the privileged character of the basin. This microbiological and chemical quality contributing to the reputation of the basin's shellfish farms needs to be preserved. | Shellfish consumption is clearly associated with the transmission of enteric viruses. The channel of transmission of enteric viruses to human beings could be decreased particularly if the systems of depuration of shellfish were optimized, standardized and if their viral efficiency was controlled. The purpose of this work was to study the contamination of oysters and to assess the efficiency of several depuration processes. Our study have demonstrated that in some cases, 50% of oysters samples contain enteric viruses or H.A.V. antigen and the quantities of viruses range from 17 to 246 FF for the rotaviruses and from 124 to 200 for the enteroviruses per 100 g of tissue. | Dès le 4 JUIN 1992, un ostréiculteur digne de confiance avait signalé aux services d'IFREMER, une situation anormale sur le banc de Ronce les Bains. Un premier prélèvement a été effectué le jour même. En effet, ce secteur avait déjà été le lieu de mortalités d'huitres estimées à 7 000 tonnes, au printemps 1988, et s'est révélé par le passé comme étant un endroit sensible. Pour information, figure en annexe le rapport établi en 1988, à destination du Préfet de la Charente Maritime. | Suedre River, a small river in Charente-Maritime, is 45 km long and drains a 380 km2 river basin. Its flow rate is about 20 m3.s(-1). Beyond the Saujon agglomeration, the river extends to the sea via a 25-km long estuary which, through the action of tides, becomes a sea arm reaching 1 km in width. Freshwater and salt marshes line the banks of the Seudre River. Freshwater marshes are occupied by large cattle farms and intensive, irrigated crops. | At the end of the 1980s, the relatively recent Australian aquaculture industry suffered from the blooming of some unknown toxic phytoplanktonic algae. This was followed by some cases of harm to consumers' health and the shutting down of some production areas. | The wetlands of Charente-Maritime represent 100,000 ha and are classified in three categories: flooded marshland valleys, freshwater marshes (farmed land) and coastal salt marshes (traditional and modern shellfish farms). The economic character of the latter two categories gives rise to conflicts of use. Both the agricultural and aquacultural professions are particularly sensitive to these conflicts due to the difficult economic times they are currently experiencing. | The microbiological classification of the Marennes-Oléron shellfish farming area (according to Council Directive 91/492/EEC) let appear sorne periodically polluted spots. A research of the potentiel sources has been conducted around these spots. Twelve points were sampled during a year with faecal coliforms and streptococcus contamination level in water (and shellfich when possible). Several microbiological pollution sources were found, in the Seudre estuary (umstream) and in Oléron island : lack of, or ineffective sewage systems, cattle farming without convenient manure treatrrtent, and so on ..
